Delivery boys protest against Zomato

Mangaluru: Even as customers in the city are on an online food-ordering spree as the app service for delivery to doorsteps has just set its foot in Mangaluru, delivery boys hired by Zomato on Sunday came out in the open against the company, alleging injustice.
Scores of delivery boys gathered at the ground in Balmatta to protest against the company. They alleged that since Zomato began operations here around four months ago, the company had been going the cab aggregator way in metropolitan cities, cutting down on their perks and other benefits.

Raghavendra, a leader representing the food delivery boys, said Zomato hired the boys assuring good benefits and easier targets. However, with the passage of time, the company tightened the noose with higher targets, while it cut down on the benefits offered to them. Raghavendra said they vented their ire against the company in open for the first time on Sunday, as the they had reached the saturation level.

“Zomato began in Mangaluru with a target of 18 deliveries per day for full timers. In a couple of months, they increased the target to 22. Now, we get our incentives only if we undertake 26 deliveries a day. Moreover, they assured to bear the fuel expenses for making deliveries over long distances. However, contrary to their assurances, we are forced to shell out money for fuel from our own pockets,” he said.

He said the company had been cutting down on various perks citing technical reasons.

The delivery boys have decided to convene a bigger protest on Monday near Hotel Srinivas on GHS Road, where Zomato is currently operating from.
