Warehouse in Vellore district gutted after massive fire

VELLORE : A massive fire that broke out at a warehouse has gutted grocery items and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) worth lakhs of rupees inside it, here at Gajaraj Nagar in Thottapalayam in the early hours of Saturday.
More than 35 firefighters from three fire stations were ushered to the spot and the blaze was contained after a three-hour long operation. Fortunately, no casualities were reported.According to a senior police officer the warehouse belongs to Saravanan, a dealer based in Sathuvachari.
Lakshmi Narayanan, the district fire officer, told reporters that a preliminary probe has revealed that the fire was triggered following an electrical fluctuation and that the flames caught up really fast. “As the warehouse was stocked with combustible goods including cooking oil, ghee and packed items,the firefighters had a tough time dousing the flames,” he added.
The fire department officials were alerted around 3:30 am, after a few residents spotted fumes and flames emanating from the warehouse. As the main entrance was totally in flames the fire fighters had to demolish the sidewalls of the warehouse to enter the building.
Meanwhile the North police station officials in the district have registered a case and are conducting further inquiries into the matter .
