SABARIMALA: The leaders of Navodhana Keralam Sabarimalayilekku, a Facebook campaign supporting the entry of young women at Sabarimala shrine, have come up with an allegation that one of the CPM leaders had given assurance to Reshma Nishant and Shanila Sajesh that they would be provided proper security during their trek to the hill shrine.
They added that the CPM leader had promised that a top police officer (an inspector general) would make all arrangements for a safe journey to the temple and this assurance was not kept.
Both Nishant and Sajesh did not return home after their first attempt to have darshan failed on January 15 and they chose to stay at a spot, five hours away from Pamba.
“Based on the information we got from some mediapersons and other reliable sources, they decided to go back as their trek would create tension on the last day of the season. Nishant and Sajesh were about to book tickets when a CPM leader called up offering support,” said Shreyas Kanaran who introduced himself as one of the administrators of the FB page, Navodhana Kerala Sabarimalayilekku.
Then Nishant, Sajesh and Kanaran reached Nilackal around 4.30am. “On reaching, they were taken to the control room. Police treated them like they were planning to hatch a mutiny and refused to provide security.
If they faced any protests along the way, police would provide security for a safe return. They were cheated,” said Kanaran, adding that the women are now staying at a safe place.
Meanwhile, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the party hadn’t taken such a decision. “I am not aware of this development. Why did they go to Sabarimala on the basis of the assurance given by somebody? We will have to verify that,” he said.
