City implements law allowing on-street parking

Surat: On-street and of-street parking law has been implemented on an experimental basis on 15 roads in the city by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) from Saturday. However, collection of fines from violators and user charges from people with regard to parking of vehicles will begin only after February 20. The state government had approved the parking policy on October 10, 2018, but the SMC’s traffic department was waiting for a suitable time to implement it.
An important aspect of this policy is to reduce congestion and pollution levels. On an experimental basis, it has been decided to take up two roads each from seven zones, appoint a nodal officer, a traffic enforcement officer and team of marshals in each zone.
“White line for on-street parking space and yellow for no-parking area have been drawn in some selected areas of the 15 roads,” said an officer of the traffic department.
Municipal commissioner M Thennarasan said, “For the first month, we will not charge or fine anyone who parks his or her vehicle in a no-parking area. User charges and fines will be collected from February 20 onwards. The parking policy is based on London city’s parking regulation. We hope it will help reduce traffic congestion and pollution on city roads.”
SMC is likely to collect about Rs20 lakh as user charges from these 15 roads. Its earnings could go up to Rs100 crore in a year if the policy is implemented across all roads in the city.
The user charges for on-street parking of a car for three hours will be Rs30 and Rs300 for 24 hours. The user charges for on-street parking for a two-wheeler will be Rs10 for three hours and Rs40 for 24 hours. People in the city paid Rs85 crore of vehicle taxes in 2018.
