Home guards, constable held for drunken skirmish
Jan 20, 2019, 23:28 ISTCoimbatore: The city police arrested a police head constable and three home guards on the charges of drunken brawl at Ukkadam in the city on Saturday night.
Police said D Shains Raj, 39, a police head constable with the Tamil Nadu Special Police at Kovaipudur, was assigned to train newly recruited home guards – Ranjithkumar, Anand and Anto – in the Nilgiris.
As the training was completed on Saturday, Shains Raj and the three home guards came to Coimbatore to celebrate.
After consuming liquor in a bar on Saturday night, Shains Raj drove his car to drop the home guards in a bus stand. He allegedly drove the car in a rash and negligent manner, which stopped close to another car driven by K Mohammed Abbas, 20, of Ukkadam, who was a second-hand car dealer.
Immediately, Abbas came out of the car and questioned Shains Raj for rash driving. However, the head constable and the home guards thrashed Abbas, who alerted the city police control room. Abbas, Shains Raj and the home guards were taken to Ukkadam police station.
Meanwhile, K Ibrahim, 29, elder brother of Abbas, visited the Ukkadam police station and assaulted Shains Raj.
The Ukkadam police received a complaint from Mohammed Abbas and registered a case against Shains Raj and three home guards under sections 75 (1) (b) of the Tamil Nadu City Police Act and 506 (i) of the Indian Penal Code. All the four were arrested and remanded in judicial custody. Another case was registered against Ibrahim for assaulting Shains Raj. He was also arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
