MUMBAI: Work on the much-awaited Parel terminus was expedited on Sunday with a record nine-hour rail block -- from 9 am to 6 pm -- to complete work on yard remodelling to provide a terminal platform and new route relay interlocking panel.

"It was a mammoth exercise and we are trying to finish the project by month end," said a senior official, pointing out the earlier stipulated deadline was March, but the project was being "fast tracked" for commuter convenience. Another block of five hours will be undertaken next Sunday to give finishing touches to the project.

The Parel Terminus project is estimated to be completed at a cost of Rs 51 crore. It was envisioned by railway officials under the second phase of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2). But the project got expedited after the horrific stampede in 2017 at Elphinstone Road station in which 23 people lost their lives.
