CHANDIGARH: The department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, held a workshop on the recent revision in the postgraduate curriculum for the NET exam here on Saturday. The chairperson of the department, Prof Deepti Gupta, in her inaugural address emphasised the need to engage with a competing global environment as the basis for these revisions. One of the major issues discussed in the workshop was how well the new curriculum could be implemented by the affiliated institutions. The syllabus which is supposed to be implemented from July 2019 has undergone significant revision. Notably, modules on writing a dissertation and various outreach activities were introduced and more stress has been laid upon Cultural Studies in the revised syllabus.
Prof Akshaya Kumar informed the audience about the UGC’s open basket system enabling students to have multiple options to choose from. He said that the new syllabus once implemented, will be helpful to students attempting the NET exam. The new syllabus will comprise segments on radio, television and social media as discussed by Surbhi Goel.
Sudhir Mehra contrasted the earlier syllabus with the new one from the point of view of the student body. Dr Meenu Gupta discussed the changes in the British Literature courses. Moreover, Prof Aneel Raina stressed upon the various repercussions of the earlier syllabus and suggested multiple innovative teaching methodologies for the current curriculum. Towards the end of the workshop, there was a question-answer session where various teachers from the affiliated institutions posed their queries regarding the implementation of these changes.
