Cape Town - Log leaders Wits were held to a draw by Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Thohoyandou on Sunday afternoon in a thrilling encounter that ended 3-3.

Wits will feel they should have taken maximum points having fought back from two goals down to lead 3-2 only for a late strike by Jabulani Maluleke to deny the Students.

Rise and Shine took the lead in the 23rd minute when a free kick by Maluleke was headed in by Bongile Booi while just five minutes later the hosts doubled their advantage through Sammy Seabi.

Wits were again undone by a set piece as Maluleke whipped in a dangerous ball and Seabi beat keeper Darren Keet.

The PSL leaders were stung into action and they found a way back into the game in the 35th minute when Gift Matupa hit a screamer from outside the area that gave Polokwane keeper George Chigova no chance.

The Students were level just three minutes later when Matupa headed in a corner from Deon Hotto.

Wits thought they had taken the lead four minutes from the half-time interval when Lehlohonolo Majoro found the back of the net but it was chalked off due to the forward being offside.

Both teams came out with positive intent after the interval but it was the visitors who took the lead on the hour mark when Thulani Hlatshwayo punished the home team for some sloppy defending to put the ball past Chigova.

The Students thought they had done enough to see out the game but Maluleke once again showed his prowess from the dead balls when he slotted home a free-kick with ten minutes remaining to earn his team a point.

Wits maintain their position at the top of the table with the draw but only lead Orlando Pirates, who have played a game less, by three points while Polokwane City find themselves in sixth place having accumulated 27 points after 17 matches.
