BHAGALPUR: A 21-year-old bride from Bhagalpur called off her wedding with a 28-year-old Bihar Police jawan after he and other ‘baaratis’ (guests accompanying the groom) allegedly assaulted her relatives in an inebriated condition on Friday night. Based on a complaint by the bride’s father, police arrested the groom for flouting the Bihar Prohibition Act (2016) and have initiated action against the other accused.

Eight months ago, families of Anusha Kumari from Akbarpur village and Uday Razak of Paain Tilakpur had fixed their match. During the wedding procession on Friday, however, an intoxicated Uday and 50 other baaratis allegedly misbehaved with Anusha’s family over the choice of music and other trivial issues. Some of Anusha’s close relatives were also allegedly thrashed by the drunk baaratis.

Not putting up with the misdemeanour, Anusha called off the wedding and walked away from the venue, setting a precedent for her family as well as the society. Her father subsequently filed a police complaint against Uday, his father and the baaratis at Kahalgaon police station, demanding the groom’s family return all items they received as wedding gifts, including Rs 6 lakh in cash.

Kahalgaon SDPO Dilnawaz Ahmed said Uday has been arrested for violating the alcohol ban in Bihar which has been in effect since 2016. “Uday has been sent to jail and legal action against other accused is being initiated on the basis of the FIR and statements of the bride’s family,” he added.
