KOLKATA: Five Mishmi takins, aged between seven months and three years, will be sent to Darjeeling zoo on Saturday. Mishmi takin is an endangered goat-antelope species.
The animals will reach Kolkata airport early on Saturday from Berlin, Germany. From there they will be taken to Darjeeling zoo as part of an exchange programme whereby Darjeeling Zoo will send two red Pandas - one male and a female of the total 21 - to Berlin next month.
Takin is the national animal of Bhutan and this species is native to India, Myanmar and China. The Mishmi takins - three males and two females - will be brought from Tierpark Berlin adventure park in Germany.
Darjeeling zoo authorities said they had been trying to bring the animals from the Tierpark Berlin - Europe's largest animal adventure park - for almost a year before they finalized the exchange programme.
Darjeeling zoo will now be the only zoo in India to house Mishmi Takins.
