Mumbai: Almost after two years of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declaring Mumbai as open defection free city, the standing Committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved tenders for building of 14,097 toilets in the jurisdiction of city. The toilets would range from one to three storeys and the cost of this project is slated to be Rs 422 crore.
The civic body plans to construct additional toilets apart from the 14,097. “The entire project will be completed approximately from one to twelve months,” said deputy municipal commissioner of solid waste management department, Vishwas Shankarvar. Besides, “The tenders for additional 8,777 toilets are in the process,” said Shankarvar added. Shankarvar revealed, most of the toilets in the jurisdiction of Mumbai are single storeyed though they have received feedback of people wanting two-three storeyed toilets.
Therefore we are planning to build additional two-three storeyed toilets in the next 12 months,” he added. Over 22,774 number of toilet cups have ben planned in this project. The construction of toilets with less than 20 cups would be completed in the next one month. BMC in the budget for the Financial Year 2018-19 had allocated Rs 10 crore for Swachh Bharat Mission. – Staff Reporter
