SHAHJAHANPUR: A faint cry of a 20-day-old baby girl led Dharmendra Kumar, a local, to the newborn who was found buried alive near a pond in Jalalabad area of Shahjahanpur district.

Hearing the cries of the girl, Kumar reached the spot, dug out the infant and rushed her to a district hospital. The doctors said that the baby’s condition is stable now. The incident took place on Friday evening in Purena village.

Meanwhile, a woman has offered to take care of the 20-day-old till her parents are identified. “I was passing through the area when I heard a baby crying. The sound of her cries led me to the spot where I found the baby alive. After admitting her to a hospital, I informed the police. It was a cruel act. How can a person abandon the baby in this cold weather?” Kumar told TOI.

Dr KK Verma, who is treating the girl, said, “The baby was brought to the hospital at 7.50pm on Friday. We have started her treatment and are checking whether she has contracted any disease.”

Thought the identity of the person, who buried the baby alive, is yet to be ascertained, but a few witnesses claimed that they had spotted a woman, who had covered her face, carrying the girl to the spot where she was found buried alive hours later.

Jalalabad station house officer Harendra Singh said, “The girl is out of danger. We are trying to find the parents of the girl.”
