TIMESOFINDIA.COM | Updated: Jan 19, 2019, 14:23 ISTHighlights
- Opposition leaders from 20 different parties came together at TMC’s opposition rally in West Bengal’s Kolkata. The rally is being organised as a show of strength against the Narendra Modi government and is also an attempt to forge an alliance of anti-BJP parties for the Lok Sabha polls.

* Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Congress
This rally is the rainbow of 22 parties. It will help to get rid of Modi government. This rally is a historic one to give a message to Modi who is doing politics of vendetta. Modi government is creating differences among people. I am happy that SC had stopped the rath yatra of BJP. Mamata is trying to stop vote split to dethrone Modi.
* Farooq Abdullah, National Conference
People are being divided on religious lines. In Northeast people are feeling scared. We have to fight together and sacrifice ourselves to save India from BJP. EVM is a dubious machine and we need to go together to EC to bring back ballots. It will be decided later who becomes PM, first we have to fight the elections together.
* H D Kumaraswamy, Karnataka chief minister
India is one of the strongest democracies in the world. But today we are witnessing a day where the democratic government (at the Centre) is headed by some undemocratic persons. Demonetisation has taken the toll of poor people of the country and those in the rural areas are the most affected. It is unfortunate that the Union government has turned deaf and mute to the needs of the people of the country.
* MK Stalin, DMK chief
The second Independence war will be during the LS polls of 2019. Modi is sure that he will not be re-elected as PM anymore. Wherever PM Modi is going he is fiercely attacking the opposition, Modi is fearful of opposition and that is why he is also cursing us, he is afraid of our unity, we must come together to safeguard India.
* Arun Shourie, former Union minister
No other government has said so many lies. Never before were institutions undermined in this manner. We all should have one aim of removing BJP from Centre.
Modi is trying to topple the government in Karnataka. We have to put one candidate unitedly against BJP. Rallies should be held in every corner to fight BJP.
* Yashwant Sinha, former Union minister
This is not about removing one man from power. We have come together to defeat an ideology.
* Jayant Chaudhary, RLD leader
What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow. Mamata Didi has shown it today. Mamata has united the opposition. We have to get rid of Modi.
* Hardik Patel, social activist
While Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had given a call to fight against the 'goro' (British) "we are fighting against 'choro' (thieves)."
* Jignesh Mevani, dalit leader
The country is going through an unprecedented crisis with the exploitation of the poor, minorities and dalits in the four-and-half-year rule of the BJP. When the 'Mahagathbandhan' forms government at the Centre, it will ensure the upholding of the Constitution, and the country will become a true socialist republic.
* Hemant Soren, JMM
We the opposition parties have to give a fitting reply to the communal... We will have to uproot BJP not only from the Centre but also from the states. You are seeing a lot of opposition leaders here ... It is because of the present political situation in the country - how communal forces are gaining ground, how BJP is trying to run the country and the states. I feel this is a dangerous situation for the country.
* Jignesh Mewani, MLA from Gujarat
BJP is trying to distort the values of the Constitution. A government of the Mahagathbandhan will come to power: Jignesh Mewani
* Gegong Apang, former chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh
Mamataji, I appreciate your effort. The regional parties should come together. Federal democracy has been facing a crisis, even SC orders are not followed.
