SILVASSA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday scoffed at the Kolkata rally of the 'mahagathbandhan', saying it is an alliance where the only selfish aim of the partners is to save their fast waning political careers.

"They have all gathered to save themselves from BJP. They're seeing public support slipping away and I can hear desperate screams of ' bachaao, bachaao, bachaao (Save us!)," Modi said while addressing a public meeting in Silvassa, the capital of the Union territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Modi added that BJP had just one MLA in Bengal but this was enough to give the opposition sleepless nights.

Attacking the opposition parties, he said, "While they are still struggling to even unite, the partners have already started bargaining to extract maximum benefits. Farmers, women, first-time voters are watching all these tactics minutely. These selfish politicians will never find a place in people's hearts."

Without taking her name, Modi attacked Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over violence in her state during the panchayat polls, saying, "When I see this picture of those who have strangled democracy by using all unconstitutional means and killed people in panchayat polls come together with 'Save Democracy' slogans, I can only say - Wah Kya Scene Hai." Incidentally, Wah Kya Scene Hai was a popular comedy show on TV in the nineties.

The PM said the formation of 'mahagathbandhan' stems from his crackdown on corruption and elimination of 'political agents' who once had a free run.

Singling out Congress, he said the alliance has been formed only to save one party. "But... they can make any number of alliances to save one party, but its wrongdoings will continue to haunt them," the PM said.
