The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered an inquiry into the incident in which a person who had approached the village officer for a certificate to bring the body of his father from Saudi Arabia was allegedly turned away by the official.
The petitioner, Asif, said that his father, working in Saudi Arabia, had died in a road accident there. Because of some discrepancies in the name of his mother in the passport and Aadhaar, an affidavit that both were the same person was necessary to get the body released from Saudi Arabia.
Asked to come back
He had approached the Andoorkonam village officer to get this certificate. In his petition, the complainant said the village officer had turned him away saying that he would not be in town for a few days. He was asked to come back after a week.
The petitioner later had to get a certificate from Aandoorkonam panchayat to fulfil the formalities in getting his father’s body released from Saudi Arabia.
The SHRC asked the Thiruvananthapuram Tahsildar to inquire into the incident and submit a report within two weeks.
