MUMBAI: A Chandivli youth who use to throw glue on women on railwa y footover bridges and see them screaming was caught red-handed by an Andheri railway police team when he targeted a 39-year-old commuter on Friday morning. Ramveer Chaudhari (24), a graduate, had thrown the glue, that leaves a burning sensation on the skin, on at least five women in a month and a half.
Chaudhari was caught seconds after he threw the glue on Gayatri Anchan. Employed at a carpentry shop, he had similarly thrown glue on a 24-year-old woman on the same bridge on Thursday. “A CCTV camera had captured Chaudhari’s act on Thursday. Five similar offences were committed since December 2018. He claimed he did it as he liked seeing victims scream and the fear on their faces, thinking they were attacked with a chemical,” said railway police senior inspector Pramod Babar.
The incident occurred when Anchal stepped onto the railway bridge from the Metro flyover. Chaudhari, who was walking behind the victim, threw the glue, which he carried in a bottle from his workplace at Lower Parel, on her back. Anchal said in her complaint, “Suddenly, I felt some chemical on my back, which was sticky, and felt a little burning sensation. I saw a man running with a bottle in his hand.” The team in civil dress nabbed the accused on hearing Anchal’s screams.
With repeated cases on the bridge, DCP Purushottam Karad supervised the team led by senior inspector Babar and nabbed the accused.
The team had been keeping a watch for a month on the flyover at Andheri Metro, that connects the Andheri railway bridge, as of the five cases three had occurred there. “Chaudhari’s face was captured on CCTV on Thursday when threw the glue on a woman. He was seen in a black shirt, which he had worn on Friday too,” police said.
Chaudhari has been booked under Indian Penal Code sections 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and 326 (A) (punishment for acid throwing). An Andheri court remanded him to police custody for three days. Police stations at Andheri and Goregaon will take his custody from railway police after that.
