Without budging on his demand for $5.7 billion dollars to fund a border wall, President Trump on Saturday proposed an immigration deal in a bid to end a partial government shutdown that has gone on for nearly a month.

Speaking from the White House, Trump offered to extend support for legislation to protect young undocumented immigrants known as "Dreamers," as well as holders of temporary protected status or TPS.

SOUNDBITE: U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: 16:17:40 "This extension will give them access to work permits, social security numbers and protection from deportation most importantly." BUT even before his speech, top Democrat Nancy Pelosi said in a statement the offer was "unacceptable" and did not "represent a good-faith effort." ADDING that his offer was unlikely to gain enough votes to pass the House or Senate.

The U.S. government has been partially shut down due to a lack of funding as the president has held out for the billions of dollars he wants to build a wall on the U.S. Mexico border.

It's turned into the longest shutdown in U.S. history leaving some 800,000 federal workers furloughed or working without pay.

Democrats have refused to meet Trump's demand for border wall funding, and have pressed Republicans to reopen the government with other legislative measures.

Trump says Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has pledged to bring the proposal to a vote on the Senate floor this week.
