THANE: A 28-year-old man died while working out at a gym in Vishnu Nagar, Thane, on Thursday evening. It was alleged that Pratik Pardeshi suffered a fatal heart attack.
“Pardeshi’s friends in the gym said that after weightlifting, he started feeling uneasy. He was resting but started feeling breathless and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. He must have suffered a heart attack. Though he was an old member of the gym, he would not work out regular but he had a muscular body,” said C Jadhav, senior inspector at Naupada police station.
The police said the family had not filed any complaints against anyone and hence, an accidental death report has been registered. The body was sent for an autopsy at Thane Civil Hospital; the report is expected on Saturday.
Cardiologists said there have been cases of overexertion putting pressure on the heart. “Along with external fitness, internal strength should be increased and for that, one should not be in a haste. Heavy workouts could lead to clots and cause heart attacks. We get cases of people in the age group of 25-35 years suffering attacks due pressure on the heart,” said Dr Vijay Surase, interventional cardiologist, Jupiter Hospital, Thane.
Gym instructors and trainers said warm-ups before workouts are necessary so that the body can take the strain. “Even if a person goes to the gym regularly, it is important to do warm-up excercises. If an individual directly starts the workout, it comes as a shock to the body. This can cause muscle injuries, sprains and, in serious cases, heart attacks,” said Durga Jena, co-owner of Machineless workout.
