CHENNAI: Police on Friday arrested a Class XII student after the 55-year-old woman he knocked down at Royapuram two days ago while driving a friend's car died in hospital on Thursday night.
Police who identified the deceased as N Nirmala, a resident of Venkatesa Naicker Street in Royapuram, said the boy was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and sent to the Correctional Facility for Boys and Girls in Kellys. The minor's three friends were in the vehicle at the time.
Around noon on Wednesday, a police officer said, Nirmala was walking along East Kalmandapam Salai when the car (TN 05 Z 1454) with the minor behind the wheel slammed into her, throwing her away for a short distance. She suffered severe injuries to the head and face and was taken to the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital where she was wheeled into the intensive care unit. She failed to respond to treatment.
A case was registered under IPC Sections 304 (A) (death caused due to negligent driving) and Section 184 (rash and negligent driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The officer said the car belonged to a woman from Bengaluru who had come to the city on a visit. She was a friend of the Class XII student's friend's mother.
Preliminary investigations showed that the boy who caused the accident was a student of a school in Mannady and had borrowed the car for a joy ride in the neighbourhood. Three of his friends, all students of the same school, were in the vehicle with him when the accident occurred, police said.
