Government relief in sight for drought-hit farmers

PUNE: Relief and rehabilitation minister Chandrakant Patil has told collectors across the state to prepare a detailed list of drought-affected farmers from 151tehsils within a fortnight for the disbursement of relief.
The state government had on October 31, 2018, declared drought in 151 tehsils in accordance with the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF) norms.
The collectors have been told to make a list of crop damage for each of the affected farmers, for which the compensation will be disbursed. The state will start the process with its funds as it still awaits the Central assistance, officials said.
“The detailed report will be soon ready. Except Kolhapur, all other districts in Pune division are affected,” Pune divisional commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar told TOI.
Nearly 36 talukas have been affected in the division that comprises Pune, Satara, Sangli and Solapur districts.
During a meeting with a central team, the state had sought financial assistance of Rs7,962 crore. Of which, Rs7,103 crore is for crop damages, Rs535 crore for fodder and Rs323 crore for water supply.
Senior revenue officials said the collectors would ensure assessment of the number of the affected farmers and ascertain the crop damage.
