New Delhi: In the suspenseful countdown to the General Elections, the Narendra Modi government seems determined to keep alive its focus on enhancing engagement with the African continent. For the first time, the Vibrant Gujarat global summit in Gandhinagar is hosting ‘Africa Day’ event on Saturday to discuss the opportunities for strategic partnerships, trade and investments. As in the summit last year, the response from Africa has been overwhelming.
Visitors to the ninth edition of this summit will get a chance to visit an exclusive Africa Pavilion where African and Indian companies will showcase products and services of mutual interest. A week from now, the South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, also a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, will be the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day. After the legendary Nelson Mandela, President Ramaphosa will be the second South African President to get this privilege. It is expected that India and South Africa will make efforts to boost ties in several areas including defence and social sector during President Ramaphosa’s two day visit scheduled to start on January 25.
