BENGALURU: A 36-year-old autorickshaw driver has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman on Tuesday at her residence near Bagalagunte, north Bengaluru, and attempting to kill her.
Nagaraj, a resident of Siddeshwar Layout near Peenya and from Kunigal, was arrested after the 37-year-old homemaker, who has been admitted to a private hospital for treatment, lodged a complaint with Bagalgunte police.
Police said Nagaraj and the woman knew each other. The incident took place around 2pm when the woman was alone at her residence.
The accused knocked on her door and when she opened it, he forcibly entered her residence, dragged her to the bedroom and raped her. Later, he allegedly hit her on the head with a metal bottle and tried to kill her by strangling her, but she managed to escape from his clutches and rush to the bathroom, police said.
Meanwhile, the woman’s neighbours were alerted by her screams and rushed to the spot. They managed to nab Nagaraj and handed him over to police.
“We have arrested Nagaraj and a local court has remanded him in judicial custody,” said Chetan Singh Rathor, deputy commissioner of police (north).
