CHENNAI: Engineering graduates from colleges affiliated to Anna University staged a protest at Guindy on Friday opposing the exam regulations introduced in 2017. The varsity has agreed to look into their demands by forming a panel.
Earlier, students who flunked in their semester exams were allowed to take up a supplementary exams soon after the exam results were announced. Arrears were conducted in the same academic year for those who didn’t clear supplementary exams.
In 2017, Anna University introduced choice based credit system (CBCS) based on All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) guidelines. According the new system, students attend seven core or elective subjects (worth three/four credit points each) along with an employment enhancement course (worth two credit points). The maximum credits a student can register for in a semester can’t exceed 36 points.
Of the 36, nearly 24 credits get consumed by semester courses and students can use only 12 credit points for reappearance. This indicated that students can reappear only for a maximum of three papers at a time. The regulation also said, students who flunked in their even semesters (held in March/April) can reappear for backlogs only in next March/April and the same applied to odd semester exams held in November.
Rajesh, one of the hundreds of students who protested on Friday, said, “We are forced to wait for more than a year to clear backlogs. This affects our career prospects”.
Responding to it, J Kumar, registrar, Anna University said, there was not awareness among students about the curriculum and a committee will be formed to look into their demands.
