In a shocking incident, the body of a 15-year-old girl, missing since Thursday, was found stuffed inside a gunny bag and buried in the backyard of a brick manufacturing unit near Ayarkunnam.

The police took into custody Ajeesh, 40, of Manarcad, in connection with the case. The murder came to light on Saturday afternoon during an investigation into a complaint lodged by the girl’s parents regarding their daughter going missing three days ago.

While examining the call details of the victim’s phone, the police found that the last call she had received was made by the accused. Based on the finding, he was taken into custody and during interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

The accused, a friend of the victim’s father who had established a relationship with the girl over cell phone, murdered her after she sought to resist his repeated attempts to abuse. ‘‘The accused, who had been employed as a driver in a hollow bricks unit and staying at a location nearby, took the girl to the property here with an intention to abuse her. But as she resisted his advances, he strangulated her to death and buried the body after stuffing it inside a gunny bag,’’ the police said.

The accused was brought to the crime scene for evidence collection on Saturday afternoon. His arrest will be recorded upon completing the scientific examination, the police said.

The accused will be produced before a magistrate on Sunday. Meanwhile, the police are also looking into the possible involvement of more than one person in the crime.
