The 20-year-old son of dismissed Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Tej Bahadur Yadav died in his home in Rewari on Thursday after his father’s licensed revolver accidentally went off, the police said on Friday.
Rohit, a college student, was alone at home at the time of the incident. The police suspect he was trying to take a selfie with the licensed revolver when it went off and a bullet pierced his head.
Mr. Yadav had made headlines two years ago after he posted videos of the alleged poor quality food being served to jawans. He was later dismissed from service. The 42-year-old had gone for a pilgrimage to the Kumbh Mela and his wife Urmila was at work when Rohit allegedly managed to lay his hands on the keys to the drawer where Mr. Yadav kept the revolver.
When Rohit did not respond to repeated calls from his mother, she asked the neighbours to check on him. When knocks on the door did not elicit any response, the neighbours peeped through the window and spotted Rohit lying in a pool of blood.
Rewari police spokesperson Deen Dayal said they received a call regarding the incident around 4.30 p.m. “Rohit’s father has in a complaint maintained that the revolver went off accidentally. We are conducting an inquest under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code,” said Mr. Dayal.
Mr. Yadav had come to stay at Rewari’s Shanti Vihar three years ago from his village Ratta Kalan. He had procured an arms licence in hope of getting a job as security guard.
