A 44-year-old Navi Mumbai resident, who was declared brain dead, has given a new lease of life to two critically-ill patients.
According to officials at Apollo Hospital in Navi Mumbai, Rajesh Ganghav, fell unconscious on Thursday and was rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with inter-cranial haemorrhage. His condition did not improve and he was declared brain dead on Friday. His family consented to donate his organs with guidance from the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC).
An Apollo Hospital spokesperson said that after completing the requisite formalities, Ganghav’s liver was transplanted into a 46-year-old from Navi Mumbai and his heart was transplanted into a patient at a private hospital in Mumbai. The spokesperson said, “His skin was sent to Masina Hospital, his corneas were sent to Laxmi Eye Bank and his bones to Tata Memorial Hospital.”
Bone donation is a rare occurrence and for the Tata Hospital, which houses the country’s oldest and city’s lone tissue bank, this was the fourth bone contribution since 2016.
Dr. Prasad Mugalikar, director of medical services at Apollo Hospitals, said, “We thank the generosity of the family and the media, and ZTCC for their sustained support in educating the public on organ donation.” Ganghav, who was a teacher at a municipal school in Bandra, is survived by his wife and five-year-old daughter.
