NEW DELHI: The killing of their parents and elder brother by a neighbour left two children in Khyala facing an uncertain future. The only source of income for the family were the two men who are now dead, with the eldest daughter having left home after marriage. Police, however, announced on Saturday, that they will step in with financial assistance for the orphans.
“We have teamed up with an organisation supported by Delhi Police to help the children. We have also contacted the Delhi Legal Services to get them immediate compensation,” said R P Upadhyay, special commissioner (South Zone). He added that the decision was taken by police commissioner Amulya Patnaik to ensure that the two young kids had some sort of a financial cushion.
Khushboo, the eldest daughter of Viru and Sunita, is married, but Aman, 13, and Laado, 8, the surviving son and daughter, faced a bleak future. Sunita died after being injured in a stabbing spree by their neighbour Mohammad Azad on Wednesday. Viru died on Thursday, followed by their son, Akash, on Friday.
The family, living on rent in JJ Colony in Khyala, depended on the earnings of Viru and Akash for survival. After completing the final rites for Akash on Saturday morning, relatives who had come from Agra, Faridabad and Hathras, worried about the two kids who didn’t even have the surety of a roof now
Senior police officers later met the relatives and assured them of assistance for Aman and Laado. The final quantum of assistance for the education and the raising of the two orphans will be finalised after consultations with the Delhi Legal Services. The cops have asked the expanded family if anyone is willing to support the kids. In case, nobody offers to help, police will hold talks with child protection services and private organisations on how the future of the children could be secured.
The police teams also discussed the matter with the local traders and by Saturday evening, the market association had deposited Rs 10,000 to take care of the immediate needs of the kids. The local cops too parted with a part of their salaries to provide some assistance for Aman and Laado.
Apart from providing monetary help, the cops have also brought in counsellors to help the two siblings through their trauma. Laado is an eyewitness to the murder, but in all probability hasn’t been able to comprehend the death of her parents and brother.
