A tourist has drowned at a popular swimming spot in Western Australia.

The man in his 20s was swimming with friends at Fern Pool, in Karijini National Park, at about 5.30pm on Thursday. 

His friends lost sight of him after he became distressed and disappeared under water.

Karijini rangers pulled him from the water but was unresponsive, police said on Thursday. 

He was declared dead at the scene by St John Ambulance officers.   

A report on the incident will be prepared for the coroner.
