Pirates thrash Horoya, top CAF group standings

2019-01-18 22:19

Johannesburg - Orlando Pirates thrashed Horoya AC 3-0 in the 2018/19 CAF Champions League Group B match at the Orlando Stadium on Friday.

The victory took the South African giants to the top of the Group B standings, while Guinean champions Horoya slipped down to fourth place.

The visitors threatened first through Ocansey Mandela, who curled the ball wide of the target following a good move by HAC.

Bucs then took control of the match and Augustine Mulenga, and Justin Shonga were both denied by Horoya goalkeeper Abdoulaye Kante.

Kante was a busy man as he was then forced to make a great save to deny Thembinkosi Lorch from close range just before the half-hour mark.

HAC were forced to replace Mohamed Fofana and Boniface Hab, who were then injured just before the halftime break.

The deadlock was then broken by the Buccaneers in first-half stoppage time after some poor defending by the visitors..

South Africa international Lorch beat two defenders in the visitors' box, before firing past Kante to make it 1-0 to Pirates heading into the half-time break.

The hosts pressed Horoya after the halftime break, but the visitors' defence which was led by Yakubu Hubu looked solid in the opening stages of the second half.

Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic reacted by pulling out Kudakwashe Mahachi and he introduced Vincent Pule as the hosts looked to double their lead.

The move paid off as Bucs doubled their lead after a defensive mistake by Horoya which allowed Justin Shonga to make it 2-0 to Pirates in the 73rd minute.

It was soon 3-0 to Pirates three minutes later following a quick move which was finished off by Shonga, who grabbed his brace with the visitors' defence exposed.

Pirates then stood firm at the back in the dying minutes of the game and they secured a 3-0 victory.
