JAIPUR: The opposition BJP disrupted the assembly proceedings on Friday while demanding clarification on the state government’s last month order about waiving farm loans up to Rs 2 lakh. The opposition accused the ruling party of misleading and cheating the farmers by not waiving their loans in entirety. Slogan shouting and protests by the BJP members forced speaker C P Joshi to adjourn the house thrice for short intervals.

Pointing out ambiguities in the loan waiver order dated December 19, leader of opposition Gulab Chand Kataria called it a “ langda aadesh” (lame order). CM Ashok Gehlot responded to the remark by saying that the opposition seems to have a “ langdi soch” (lame mentality). Gehlot also read out a letter he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on farmers’ issues, including purchase of ‘ Moong’ on minimum support price and the demand to waive farm loans across the country.

The farm loan waiver issue was raised through adjournment motion by Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLTP) leader Hanuman Beniwal. He demanded that the government should waive all farmers’ loans, including those taken against Kisan Credit Card. Kataria later claimed that the Congress in its election manifesto had promised a complete loan waiver to farmers but the order its government passed on December 19 not only fell short on the promise but was also full of ambiguities. “It is over a month since the Congress government was formed but no farmer has received the loan waiver benefit so far, despite the claims about having provided the relief within 10 days,” Kataria said in the house.

He added, “The government order does not clarify who are eligible to claim waiver or if the farmers who availed waiver under previous BJP government are again eligible for the waiver or after claiming waivers will the farmers be eligible for fresh loans. Also, from where the state government will get the funds to waive farm loans?” Kataria demanded that the government should tell the house by which date the loan waiver benefit would reach the farmers’ bank accounts.

Parliamentary affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal interrupted Kataria and accused him of wrongly stating that the Congress manifesto promised complete loan waiver.

Replying to Kataria’s allegations, CM Gehlot said farmers’ loans can be waived in entirety only by the Centre.
