KOLKATA: The chill returned with a bang on Thursday with the mercury sliding 3 notches below the normal mark. The northwesterly flowing in unhindered added to the chill factor. According to the Met office, this cool spell will last at least for a few more days.
Kolkatans woke up to a breezy Thursday when the dry and cold northwesterly made its presence felt. The minimum temperature dipped to 11.3°C, ringing in another cool spell. At 25.1°C, the maximum temperature, too, was a notch below normal.
“The mercury is unlikely to go down further. But it will remain below the normal mark — around 12°C — over the next few days. Hopefully, this will be yet another cool spell this winter,” said GK Das, director (weather) at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.
“The northwestern states from where the northwesterly is blowing in are under a cold spell. Currently, there is no major weather system that will block this wind system. That is why we expect the next few days to be cool in Kolkata,” said Das.
A trough over Bihar on January 14 and 15 had injected moisture into the south Bengal regions, including Kolkata. This had pushed up the mercury. Now decks are clear for the mercury to hover below the normal mark once again.
