BHUBANESWAR: A man from Odisha’s Khurda district allegedly committed suicide after he failed to get a house under the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or the state’s Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana. Authorities ordered an inquiry into the suicide on Thursday.

Laxmidhar Behera (35) allegedly consumed poison on Wednesday. He is survived by his wife, two sons (aged 9 and 7) and daughter (12).

Before his death, Behera made a series of videos about his plight, one of which went viral. In one of these videos, he alleged that government employees asked for a bribe from him for the house. There is no clarity on who shot the videos. TOI could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos.

“I prayed before the administration to come and visit my house and see my miserable condition. Please help me. If not possible, please provide me a job in any company to earn something to repay my debts. I am crying today . Please help me... I will end my life if I cannot get help,” Behera is seen saying in a video.

The video triggered a political backlash with Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan terming it ‘a government-sponsored killing’. Khurda collector Nirmal Chandra Mishra claimed that a work order to build a house in the name of Behera had already been issued.

SP (Khurda) said the police have started an investigation after registering an unnatural death case.
