Poor maintenance of cow shelter leaves 3 calves dead, others unwell
TNN | Jan 18, 2019, 08:13 ISTAMBALA: Three calves were found dead and others were found to be unwell during a surprise check conducted by “Ek Aur Sudhar” cell under the supervision of project director Rocky Mittal at a cow shelter in Sullar village. Also, the cows were being fed dry fodder.
Gaushala managers said more than 400 cows died here in the last 1.5 years. “The government is trying to improve the situation and I have instructed officials concerned to ensure the same,” said Mittal.
When asked about the stray bull menace in the district, he said, “The biggest problem at this moment is of that of American breed bulls. These bulls often attack citizens and calves and have caused fatal accidents. They should be sterilized. Milk plants and dairies abandoning cattle once they stop giving milk should be strictly dealt with.”
On allegations of open disposal of cattle carcasses, Mittal said, “There should be proper disposal of dead cattle to maintain hygiene and our government is working to find solutions to this problem. I would ask the DC to avail the relevant amount of green fodder for cattle at Sullar pound. Moreover, there should be a monthly pension of Rs 300 per cattle for their lifelong care.”
Harkesh, a Sullar pound representative said they have no support from the government. “We have spent Rs 20 to Rs 25 lakh extra from our own pockets and with the help of donors to develop resources. We have not received support from the government. For the last 9 months, not a single trolley of green fodder has reached the cow shelter from the government. Political leaders are making speeches about cows but the ground reality is the opposite. We have shown the actual situation to Rocky Mittal today,” he said.
According to Harkesh, the Rs 31 lakh grant received from the administration is not enough to run a cowshed of this scale. “We have spent Rs 54 lakh from our own sources for maintenance,” he said.
