Protest by student organisations seeks scrapping of CBCS at UoM

Mysuru: Activists of the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) and All India Democratic Youth Organisation (AIDYO) assembled in large numbers in front of Crawford Hall, the administrative hub of the University of Mysore (UoM), demanding the repeal of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) implemented by the management. The protesters complained of the obsolescence of the existing system, and complained about the faculty members of the varsity being ill-equipped to deal with the system. The activists withdrew the protest following assurances from the UoM management that their complaints would be addressed at the earliest.
Students from various colleges affiliated to UoM participated in the protest that began before noon. AIDYO Karnataka president M Umadevi, who led the protest, warned the varsity management of launching a protest in four districts covered by UoM if the demands of the students were not met soon.

“Most of the students have received marks cards with errors in them. The standard of evaluation is poor. What is worse, the varsity has hiked the fee for reevaluation. All of these problems have combined to create a chaotic atmosphere in the college. Students are facing a lot of problems as a result,” she added.

Umadevi pointed out that students were provided no rational explanation about the errors in the report cards. A section of protesters asked UoM management to take students into confidence before implementing the new system.

“Neither the teachers nor our teachers have any information about passing criteria, grading system, etc,” the protesters said.

A delegation of students led by Umadevi later met UoM vice-chancellor Prof Hemantha Kumar, and registrar R Rajanna, and the duo assured them of resolving the issues at the earliest.

AIDYO Mysuru district president SH Harish and secretary Suma were among those who participated in the protest.
