A Jadavpur University professor who expressed misogynistic and sexist views on Facebook -- including by comparing a virgin girl to a sealed bottle -- has now been barred from taking classes or even entering the campus.
Kanak Sarkar works in the prestigious Kolkata varsity's international relations department. The decision to bar him from teaching was taken after a meeting of teachers and students from the department.
Omprakash Mishra, the head of the international relations department, has informed the vice-chancellor that students asked for Sarkar's expulsion.
Mishra also announced -- after meeting the V-C -- that Kanak Sarkar had been barred from entering the campus pending an inquiry.
"In view of the recommendation of the student-teacher committee of the department, Prof. Kanak Sarkar is divested of his teaching duties with immediate effect. Substitute arrangements would be decided in the meeting of the Board of Studies scheduled on 18th January 2019."
On Monday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) had asked the West Bengal DGP to investigate and take appropriate action against Kanak Sarkar.
Kanak Sarkar recently wrote a series of Facebook posts on "virgin brides".
"To most boys [a] virgin wife is like [an] angel," he said. Also sample this shocker: "A girl is biologically sealed from birth until it is opened [sic]."
A Facebook user then posted a photoshopped image where Kanak Sarkar's face was on the Statue of Unity (a statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel).
He called it the Statue of Virginity.
