College codes appear under marks column in varsity merit list

Nagpur: The embarrassment caused due to mistakes in merit and medal lists, despite revising them several times, during the last convocation seems to have had no impact on the Nagpur University (NU) exam section. With just two days to go, the merit list finalized for the 106th convocation has several major blunders, which could once again create controversies at the grand ceremony to be attended by governor CH Vidyasagar Rao, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, HCL founder Shiv Nadar and others.
When TOI scanned the lists, it found marks column carrying certain numbers against the topper’s names for MCom. The same column had led to several complaints about students scoring less marks being declared toppers. This had forced NU to drop the column, even as calls for revealing the CGPA calculation method went unheeded.
During the 105th convocation, Hislop College’s MA psychology student Vijayshree Bajaj along with her parents had confronted the NU academic procession on its way to the stage. Her name was removed following a tie based on CGPA, and the university decided to give the medal to the younger candidate, Rachel Peters. Bajaj (1,760) had scored more marks than her classmate Peters (1,689).
On Wednesday, TOI found that centre codes have been printed under the marks column, thus creating doubts in the minds of parents and the 10 MCom students. Interestingly, the codes give an impression that students with fewer marks are toppers while those with more are at the bottom.
To avoid a repeat of the 105th convocation fracas, NU had decided to consider marks in case of a tie in CGPA, rather than age as was done in the Bajaj case.
However, CGPA is missing in several courses in the merit list for the 106th convocation. In some courses, both CGPA and marks, or marks and division are carried. Thus, it is not clear if CGPA, marks or division are the criteria for deciding toppers.
Also, as per the medal list, some winners have been declared on the basis of marks while others on highest CGPA. NU had switched to CBCS pattern, and has been awarding gold medals on the basis of CGPA.
Pro-VC Pramod Yeole didn’t answer TOI’s queries on the medal and merit lists goof ups.
Director of Examination Niraj Khaty said the university has framed norms as per UGC guidelines on choice based credit system (CBCS) pattern. He couldn’t explain why several toppers are decided on the basis on marks while others on CGPA.
Academician Dr Vedprakash Mishra said it is discriminatory to use different yardsticks. “It causes injustice to real toppers. Topping exam is not an accident but a privilege,” he said.
