AHMEDABAD: The special investigation team (SIT) formed to investigate the murder of former BJP MLA Jayanti Bhanushali is yet to release a sketch of the killers even a week after he was shot dead by two assailants aboard a running train.

“We have made primary sketches of the shooters but they were not the same persons seen by the co-passenger, the TT and attendants of the first-class coach of the Sayajinagri Express. Now, we are in process of refining the faces so that they can be identified,” said a police official who is part of the SIT.

Earlier, sources said that SIT officials had zeroed in on shooters and even claimed the two of them had been detained. Officials have remained tight-lipped about developments. Besides, as many officers are busy with security arrangements for VVIPS at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2019, the investigation is moving at a snail’s pace.

Bhaushali was shot dead in in the wee hours of January 8, in the ‘G’ coupe of the H1 coach of the Sayajinagari Express when he was travelling from Bhuj to Ahmedabad. Investigators say the assassins pulled the chain to stop the train from the H1 compartment after shooting Bhanushali dead and got off.

The government had, on the same day, formed an SIT under the supervision of DGP CID (crime) and railways, Ashish Bhatia, which will be assisted by officials of the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) and city crime branch. As Bhatia went on leave for his daughter’s wedding, the responsibility of the probe has been given to Additional DGP Ajay Tomar.

Bhanushali's phone a veritable Pandora’s box

Sources in the police said that when the SIT began its investigation into Bhanushali's death, they recovered various videos in his cellphone, which could turn into a Pandora’s box for various political leaders. Sources in the SIT said the videos may have been the reason for his murder. Apart from the videos, audio recordings in which a codeword – “Mithi Kharek” (sweet dates) — was used, were also found, in which the names of some top political leaders were mentioned in connection with the Naliya sex scandal.
