Jayme Closs' kidnapper had an 'insane obsession' with roadkill and filled his family's cabin with animal heads that he stuffed himself, claims ex-girlfriend who said he slashed her mother's tires after she dumped him

  • Jake Patterson, the 21-year-old charged with kidnapping Jayme Closs and killing her parents, has been branded a 'scumbag' by his 'first and last' girlfriend
  • Briana dated Patterson for 4 months in ninth grade after meeting in math class
  • Patterson told her while they dated that he was 'experimenting' with animals
  • He had begun to collect dead animals and roadkill and stuff them himself
  • Briana said Patterson also lost his temper easily and became a 'completely different person' when he was mad while they were dating

Jayme Closs' alleged kidnapper collected dead animal heads and had an 'insane obsession' with roadkill, his ex-girlfriend has claimed.

Jake Patterson, 21, dated Briana in ninth grade but became so embittered when she dumped him that he allegedly slashed the tires on her mother's car.

Now Briana, who dated Patterson for four months, is revealing even more details about the ex she calls a 'scumbag'.

It was after a dead dog was found in the woods one day in August 2011 that Patterson told his girlfriend that he was 'experimenting' with animals.

Patterson had begun to collect dead animals and roadkill, filling his family's cabin with animal heads, she said.

'I was like, "What the f**k?"' Briana, now 21, told RadarOnline. 'He found those animals on the side of the road and stuffed them himself.'

Briana initially thought Patterson was '"nerdy and quiet' but kind of cool' when they first met in math class, but said she quickly saw his signs of 'rage'.

'He'd lose his temper easily,' she said. 'He was quiet, but when he got mad he was a completely different person.'

While they were dating that summer, he became 'full of rage' after they had a small argument.

'I saw his true colors that night,' Briana recalled. 'He literally scared the hell out of me.'

'I was at the cabin and he came out with this weird-looking masquerade mask. It was scary as hell.'

Briana still recognized the address of Patterson's cabin when news broke that he was charged with the murders of James and Denise Closs and kidnapping Jayme.

'When I saw the address of where Jayme was being held on the news, I dropped a glass I was holding. I said, "No. No way,"' she recalled.

Briana claims that during their relationship Patterson told her he had been 'experimenting' with animals, collecting roadkill and filling his family's cabin with animal heads

'I mean, I wasn't surprised, but I was. That could've been anyone - it could've been me. It could've been my sister. I slept at that house. I ate at that house.'

'We all hung out at that house - it was beyond surreal.'

Briana is one of many people who have shed details on Patterson's loner lifestyle.

Jim Moyer, Patterson's grandfather, described him as a 'polite' and 'nice boy' who often 'backed off from crowds'.

'Computer games were more of a priority than social interaction,' Moyer said of Patterson, who he called 'quiet and shy'.

In a group photo taken in his 2015 graduation year, Patterson can be seen sitting alone, his head buried in a book, as smiling students pose for the camera.

Another high school photo obtained by DailyMail.com shows him play-fighting with another teen on the trunk of a Toyota sedan, suggesting Patterson did have a small number of friends.

That car is still parked beside the now-deserted cabin in Gordon, which is strewn with old furniture, trash and junk cars and is where Patterson allegedly kept Jayme prisoner for 87 excruciating days.

The teen in the picture play fighting with Patterson, Dylan Fisher, told the Duluth News Tribune that there were no 'red flags' and that Patterson was a 'normal' student who loved his family and his dog Rosie.

'Just like anybody else, you could joke with him,' Fisher said. 'He was a human being.'

Patterson was on the school quiz bowl team but shied away from sports after breaking his arm in an elementary school wrestling bout.

'He was always reading, he always had his head in a book. He was very intelligent but he didn't apply himself,' another former classmate told DailyMail.com.

'He was awkward with everyone, not just girls. He made very little eye contact with anyone.

'We knew he had a rough life. It was pretty evident he was losing his hair in high school but he was never bullied over it as far as I know.'

Former student Tristan Roberts boasted of fighting with Patterson and kicking him off the school bus.

'Got in a fight with him on the bus once in HS should have kicked em out the emergency exit,' he wrote on Facebook.

'His eyes never held much of a soul. If he had someone who cared about him probably would never have happened.'

Patterson stated in his high school yearbook that he wanted to join the Marines, but he was discharged after only five weeks.

A Marines spokesperson said that the brevity of his career indicated that 'the character of his service was incongruent with Marine Corps' expectations and standards.'

Patterson held a job at Barron's Jennie O Turkey Factory - where Denise and James Closs worked for more than two decades - for just one day some three years ago.

His latest job at Saputo Cheese Factory lasted just two days.

But it was on his first morning drive there that Patterson first spotted Jayme on her way to school and hatched his insidious plot to snatch and imprison her.

Hours before his first court appearance Monday, the horrifying details of the Closs murders and Jayme's abduction emerged in the 12-page criminal complaint against Patterson.

It told of how Jayme cowered in the bathroom with her mother after Patterson stormed her home in Barron, Wisconsin and shot her father in the head with a shotgun.

The petrified youngster then watched in horror as he did the same to her mother minutes after kicking in the flimsy bathroom door.

Dressed in black from head to toe - including a face mask, hat and gloves - Patterson grabbed the terrified teenager, taped her hands and ankles, covered her mouth and dragged her out of her home to his waiting car.

According to Jayme, her abductor then bundled her into the trunk and drove approximately two hours to the cabin where he would hold her for the next three months until her remarkable escape last week.

Patterson is charged with kidnapping, armed burglary and two counts of first-degree intentional homicide.
