Sam Burgess sported what appeared to be a black eye during a training session ahead of the NRL season.

Burgess, 30, was training with his South Sydney Rabbitohs teammates including brothers George and Tom at Redfern Oval on Wednesday, and appeared relaxed as he laughed and joked during the session.

The rugby league star walked out on his wife Phoebe in January as the couple's relationship broke down shortly after the birth of their second child.

Sam was pictured walking out of their lavish family home in Sydney's south east with three fully-packed overnight bags after the split.

In September, Sam was cleared of any wrongdoing after a 23-year-old woman claimed two unnamed Souths players had sent her lewd images of themselves via Facebook in May.

When news of the sexting scandal broke, Phoebe - who was 28 weeks' pregnant with her second child - cancelled a scheduled appearance at Sydney's Royal Randwick racecourse.
