Contempt of court, says Yechury; wants SC to take suo motu cognisance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments on the Sabarimala issue has dangerous implications and is a direct assault on the Constitution and the Supreme Court, CPI(M) Polit Bureau has said in a statement here.

The Prime Minister had called the LDF government’s stand on Sabarimala shameful. “The conduct of Kerala’s LDF government on the Sabarimala issue will go down in history as one of the most shameful behaviour by any party and government. We knew that communists do not respect Indian history, culture and spirituality, but nobody imagined that they will have such hatred,” he had said in Kollam on Tuesday.

Party general secretary Sitaram Yechury demanded that the Supreme Court take cognisance of his comments. “At least now the Supreme Court should take suo motu cognisance of this contempt of court by Modi. Rule of Law must prevail, not rule by mobs. We abide by the orders of the Supreme Court. It is truly shameful that a person on the chair of PM, sworn to uphold law & Constitution, says this,” Mr. Yechury tweeted.

The CPI(M) Polit Bureau pointed out that the Left front government was merely implementing the Supreme Court judgment. “He is admonishing an elected government for implementing the judgment of the Supreme Court,” the Polit Bureau said. Mr. Modi, it said, spoke more like an RSS pracharak than a Prime Minister.

“His statement has dangerous implications for the future, as it means that any Supreme Court judgment, which does not suit the interests of the BJP and RSS will be defied and a government seeking to implement it will be attacked by them,” the statement said.

Calling it an “unprecedented situation” the CPI(M) said all those who subscribe to the Constitution and secular democratic values would condemn the PM’s stand on the issue.
