6 khair wood smugglers held in Keri

PONDA: Keri range forest team of North Goa forest division arrested six offenders, Baigo Ladu Gawade, Nilin Baigo Gawade, Pandurang Laximan Jadhav, Amaresh Gurov, Madhukar Arjun Gawas, Ajit alias Alia Tatoba Namdev Ghadi, all residents of Ai, Maharashtra, for illegally cutting and transporting khair wood on Tuesday evening at Navelim-Keri in Bicholim taluka.


The felling was on in private property located opposite a fiberglass factory, adjoining the road leading from Navelim to Maina ferry point. More than 25 khair trees have been cut illegally by the offenders and were being transported in a vehicle.


Along with khair wood worth Rs 1 lakh, other tools used in crime including a cutter, a two-wheeler and a four-wheeler vehicle were seized by the forest team. Further investigation is under way, said officials.
