NEW DELHI: The three-member selection panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet on January 24 to decide on the name of new chief of CBI, which has been functioning without a full-time director since Alok Verma was removed from the post last week.
The Chief Justice of India and the leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge are the other two members in the panel.
The sources said the government had proposed the meeting on January 21 earlier while Kharge wanted the meeting on January 24 or 25.
After mutual consultations, the government has finalised January 24 as the date for the meeting to select the new CBI director.
IPS officer M Nageswara Rao has been virtually heading the agency as interim director for the past three months, except January 9 and 10, when Alok Verma was reinstated by the SC before the PM-led panel again removed him on the charges of suspected corruption, interference in probes and dereliction of duties.
Sources say that the IPS officers of 1983, 1984 and 1985 batches are being considered for the post of CBI director. Among the front runners for the post are DG BSF Rajni Kant Mishra, NIA chief Y C Modi, CISF DG Rajesh Ranjan and DGP Uttar Pradesh OP Singh. The fate of Gujarat cadre IPS officer – Rakesh Asthana is not known as court has asked the CBI to finish the probe against him in 10 weeks. He was among the frontrunners for the post till last year until Alok Verma filed a corruption case against him on October 15 which Asthana has rejected as “fabricated”.
The names of IPS officers from these batches are currently being vetted by the Intelligence Bureau, Chief Vigilance Commission and the special unit of CBI for any adverse strictures by the courts, conviction, in any, in corruption or other cases, etc.
In the tussle between Alok Verma and Asthana, CVC had given a damning report against Verma while suggesting further probe against him. There will also be a formal investigation against Verma soon, according to sources.
Meanwhile, sources also claimed that the government has not yet accepted the resignation of Alok Verma from the post of DG Fire Services and Home guards, where he was appointed by the panel after removing him from the CBI.
The Congress has been attacking the Prime Minister for not appointing a regular CBI director. Kharge had also written to the PM demanding early holding of the meeting of the high powered committee to appoint a regular CBI director.
