TIRUVANNAMALAI: The Thandrampattu police in Tiruvannamalai district on Wednesday arrested a 58-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting and murdering a 10-year-old girl, police said.
The girl had been missing since Monday. Her body was recovered from bushes near a sugarcane field in her native village -- Thenmudiyanur -- on Tuesday afternoon.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the girl had died due to suffocation after being sexually assaulted by Ganesan, a resident of the same village.
A senior police officer investigating the case said that the victim was the daughter of a daily-wage earner. She was being taken care of by her maternal grandparents after her parents were separated.
The sexual assault and murder happened on Monday while the girl’s grandparents went to buy provisions to celebrate the Pongal festival. When elderly couple returned home, the girl was missing.
On Tuesday, Arumugam, a local villager grazing cattle in a sugarcane field in the village spotted the girl’s body in the bushes. On being alerted by the villagers, personnel from Thandrampattu police station and Tiruvannamalai superintendent of police M R Sibi Chakravarthi and DSP Hema Chithra rushed the spot. They retrieved the body and sent it to the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
Speaking to TOI, Hema Chithra said, “During our investigations, we found Ganesan had been absconding from the village for the past two days.We launched a manhunt for him and arrested him from a hideout in the early hours of Wednesday,” she said.
Police said the accused had confessed to have raped the girl after taking her to an abandoned spot. The man said he had not expected that the girl would die.
Ganesan has been booked under sections 376 (A) (B) and 302 of the IPC and sections 5 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
