Tamil Nadu CM announces Rs 5 lakh compensation to kin of drowned fisherman

MADURAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of a fisherman from Rameswaram who drowned after his boat capsized in the Palk Straits while being chased by Sri Lankan navy personnel.
Nine fishermen from Rameswaram, who set sail on two boats on January 12, were fishing in the Palk Straits in the early morning hours of January 13 when the Sri Lankan navy attacked them. Both boats capsized while being chased by a navy boats. While eight of the fishermen were rescued, Muniasamy drowned.
In a statement on Wednesday, the chief minister said he was deeply distressed by the plight of the fishermen who were being attacked by the Sri Lankan navy when they were fishing in the Palk Straits which was their traditional fishing region. All such incidents were taken to the notice of the central government, he added.
The Tamil Nadu government would take all steps required to protect the livelihood of the fishermen, the chief minister said.
