NEW DELHI: The south district police have arrested a 39-year-old man who allegedly married women after befriending them on matrimony portals and then disappeared with their belongings after sexually assaulting them.

The accused has been identified as Surya Babu (39), who allegedly works for an IT firm in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He belongs to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The cops arrested Babu after a woman lodged a complaint that she had been duped of her belongings and raped by a man who she had recently married. The FIR was lodged under sections of rape and cheating in last July but the accused had changed phone numbers and gone underground.

Cops traced the address of the computer which he was using to access the matrimony portals. He was finally nabbed on January 13 and has been brought to Delhi for further interrogation.

It was found that Babu was already married and had a child. He told the cops that he has similar profiles on other matrimony sites as well. Police suspect that there might be more victims duped by him across the country. The role of his wife is also being investigated.

Babu would pose as an IT engineer in Bengaluru to attract interests, and after a few days of ‘marrying’ women, he would claim to go on a business tour and then disappear with the valuables of the woman.
