What does it take to put some Hellcats, Camaros and other powerful cars in their corners? It depends. In this case, a Volkswagen Golf might do the job quite nicely.
Mind you, this isn’t your average German hatchback, but the range-topping ‘R’. In the latest iteration, it has 300 horsepower available on tap, and all-wheel drive for improved traction.
The stock model, however, would not do for the job at hand. This Golf R has been heavily tuned, with the mods lifing the output of the 2.0-liter four-banger to an amazing 641 HP, according to the owner. In terms of power, that’s Lamborghini Huracan Evo territory.
There aren’t many vehicles out there that could beat this Golf R, despite some of them having twice as many cylinders. It has a very impressive record, and among those that dared to run down the strip next to it was a 900+ horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.
As exciting as it may be, the funny thing is that this Golf R is in fact slower than other modified examples we’ve come across recently. There are Golfs out there with nearly 1,000 horsepower, such as the R32 that went against a tuned Toyota Supra, and even more powerful ones, like Boba Motoring’s Mk2, a true supercar killer, to mention just two.
Even so, this tuned hyper hatch was one of the stars at a 1/2-mile drag racing event held in Puerto Rico. And, despite being very, very fast, it eventually met its match – and you can find out who that was, along with all the other battles, by clicking on the following video.
