MOHALI: The Crime Investigating Agency (CAI) of Mohali police have busted a gang of two-wheeler thieves and recovered 15 two-wheelers from their possession. Two gang members have also been arrested on Monday.
“They will be produced in the court on Tuesday,” said a police official.
CIA in charge inspector Jagdev Singh said following secret information, under the supervision of SP Varun Sharma, the CIA branch team set up a check post in Kharar to arrest the two-wheeler thieves.
The police stopped two persons riding a Bullet motorcycle for checking. The documents of the vehicle were found fake. The police then arrested the two accused, who were taken to the court, which sent them to two-day police remand.
Inspector Jagdev Singh said: “During interrogation, the two accused confessed to have stolen 15 two-wheelers. They have been identified as Akash Bawa, 20, and Ajit Singh alias Jeet, 20, both residents of Kharar. They are drug addicts and confessed that they had been stealing the motorcycles to buy drugs.”
He said the police would ascertain the modus operandi to sell the motorcycles and also find out the source from where they purchased drugs.
With their arrest, the police have solved 15 cases of motorcycle thefts. They were active in Mohali, Kharar, Mullanpur and Kurali areas.
Cops recover stolen car through fastag
Zirakpur police on Monday claimed to have recovered a stolen car after identifying it through a fastag fixed on the car. The car was seen in the CCTV footage during its entry-exit at a toll plaza near Aziz Nagar on Zirakpur-Patiala road. The two car thieves have also been arrested.
The accused have been identified as Rajnish Sharma, 20, and Rintu, 20. The police said they would be produced in the court on Tuesday.
Investigating officer ASI Chakaur Singh said a complaint of car theft was lodged by Amit Kumar stating that his brand-new Hyundai Accent car was stolen from outside a sweet shop in Baltana, three days ago. He had left his car on ignition to buy sweets from a shop. He said his friend was also sitting in the car. He said as he took some time to buy sweets, his friend stepped out of the car to check on him. In the meanwhile, two scooter riders came and one of them drove away his car.
Since then, the car was first driven to Amritsar and was driven back the same day. As it passed through the toll plaza, the CCTV cameras recorded it through fastag. The police had already flashed the car number at various toll plazas.
Later, the accused drove it to Amritsar and returned the next day. It again passed through the same toll plaza. The police had already set up a check post near a marriage palace on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway and intercepted the vehicle.
