MUMBAI: The high court on Tuesday heard a PIL seeking that the BEST strike be called off. Senior advocate M P Rao, representing BEST, told the court it was ready for talks with the union except at gun point. He said the union knows BEST's financial position and has stalled reform measures such as taking nearly 450-500 buses on wet lease. "They went to the industrial court and got an injunction," he said.
The union's advocate, Neeta Karnik, said wet leasing should be with BEST staff and not contract workers. She said that eventually BEST was going to be privatised. "A time will come when there will be no BEST. Only contract buses," she said. Kumbhakoni and senior advocate Anil Sakhare, appearing for BMC, said the union must call off the strike immediately.
On Monday, a bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice Nitin Jamdar had directed a state panel looking into BEST workers' issues to submit its report in a sealed cover.
