Piped cooking gas in Ranchi, Jamshedpur households from March
ASRP Mukesh | TNN | Jan 15, 2019, 22:00 ISTRANCHI: Households in Ranchi and Jamshedpur will be able to avail piped natural gas (PNG) for domestic purpose under Centre’s City Gas Distribution (CGD) project from March this year.
Around 1400 households falling in Mecon area will be the first beneficiary of the facility in the state capital, while in Steel City, over 800 houses in Sonari have so far been connected with the CGD connections for final roll out.
In addition, two CNG fuel stations are set to debut in both the cities by March.
Gail (India) Limited’s executive director (eastern region) KB Singh said that by December 2019, they have a target of gas supply directly to 2000 houses each in Ranchi and Jamshedpur, groundworks for which are already underway.
“In Mecon (Ranchi), so far we have finished installation of pipes for cooking gas supply in about 1409 houses. As per the mandate, as many as 5097sqkm area is to be covered under CGD in Ranchi to cater to 29.14 lakh population as per 2011 census. Under piped cooking gas in houses, we have a target of 29962 connections by 2023,” said Singh while talking to newsmen during a roadshow organised by Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board.
“In Jamshedpur, so far around 850 connections have been given in Sonari area. We ought to lay pipeline in 3562 sqkm area to cater 22.91 lakh population. In terms of connections, we have a target of giving 24278 connections by 2023 in phased manner,” he added.
The total estimated cost for these projects is around Rs 221.45 crore for Jamshedpur and Rs 226 crore for Ranchi, he said.
On CNG stations, Singh said that to bypass issues of land acquisition, initially, they are partnering with existing petrol pumps to set up CNG outlets.
“In Ranchi, two CNG stations will start operating from March in Ormanjhi and Khukri. In Jamshedpur, they are coming up in Mango, Bhilaipahari area,” he revealed, adding that more CNG stations will be rolled out once people start shifting from normal petrol/diesel by opting cleaner fuel such as CNG and the likes, which will also be economically viable for public.
