NEW DELHI: A decorated Special Cell cop is battling for life while his colleague has been injured after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on Barapullah elevated roadway. The two policemen were trailing a gunrunner on Monday night when their Splendor was hit from behind by a vehicle. While police suspect it to be a case of hit and run, they are not ruling out the possibility of a deliberate attack by associates of the suspect.

Delhi Police head constable Rajpal Kasana had been awarded an out-of-turn promotion for his bravery in an operation against a gun-running syndicate. Mohit had similarly been promoted out of turn. The two have been partners in numerous operations in the last few years.

Around 3.30pm on Monday, police received information that a Ghaziabad-based arms supplier would be going to R K Puram from Akshardham. They, therefore, decided to intercept him on Barapullah elevated road. Kasana and Mohit spotted the suspect near Sarai Kale Khan and went after him in pursuit, with Mohit steering the two-wheeler and Kasana behind him.

They were driving up the loop near the sun dial, trying to keep a discreet distance from the gunrunner. Mohit later said that a white car had come speeding from behind and hit their motorcycle and driven off, leaving them sprawled on the road. Kasana apparently lost his helmet during the collision and injured his head when he fell.

Seeing Kasana unconscious, Mohit stopped a car and rushed his colleague to AIIMS trauma centre. Mohit too was treated for his injuries there. The Sunlight Colony police station was informed about the incident.

Police sources said no pieces of the vehicle involved in the crash was found at the site. CCTV footage from the road is being scanned for clues to the car driver’s identity.

If not an accident, the cops suspect that the car had trailed the two cops on the bike and chose the loop to hit them because it is desolate and offers space to speed and leave the spot. The damage on the bike suggests that the vehicle was driving at high speed and could have been an SUV.

A case has been registered for rash and negligent driving and causing hurt due to negligence.
